Sanctification
The "Tion" Series

“Tion” Part 3 – Sanctification 1 Thessalonians 4:3 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God;  for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;  that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,  not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;  that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified.  For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.  Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.

JUSTIFICATION  - Legal Standing               Once for all lifetime

SANCTIFICATION - Internal condition       Continuous throughout life

To sancify something is – TO SET A PART

Sanctification was the fire that burnt the sacrifice.

The fire that was in the burning bush (but the bush was not consumed)  The fire that was in the fiery furnace (but not one hair or clothes were burned)

The fire at Mt Carmel with 850 prophets of Baal cut themselves but the man of God Elijah dug trenches and filled them with water, yet the Holy fire penetrated the obstacles and set the altar on fire.

The same fire that showed up in an upper room at the day of Pentecost where 120 believers were praying for power from on high.

The same fire that quickens this mortal body and after we die to our flesh and sin consumes us and fills us with power to tread on serpents and scorpions and nothing shall by no means harm us.

What happens after conversion? 1.    Evil spirits try to make us doubt that we are saved. 2.    Sin and old habits try to reassert their power over us.

What Sanctification Affects:

1. Our Mind Colossians 3:8 now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.  Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,  10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, Philippians 1: I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,  4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy,  for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,  6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; 1 Peter 1:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;  14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;  15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,  16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” Romans 12:1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

2. Our Emotions  1 Thessalonians 5: 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctif] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

3. Our Will Romans 6: 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.  13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!  16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?  17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.  18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. Hebrews 12: 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:  15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

4. Our Spirit 2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

5. Our Physical Bodies 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.  Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.  3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

How to grow in our sanctification:

Reading, studying, and being taught the Bible enables us to better understand who God is, what he has done for us, and how he calls us to live.

Praying expresses our faith in the sovereign power of God to accomplish what only he can do.

Fellowship with other believers encourages us to put our faith into practice by loving and bearing with one another. Giving weans our hearts off putting our trust in the fleeting things of this world and shows that we value the work of God even more than our own comfort.

Sharing the gospel with others brings us the joy of participating in God's work of extending his kingdom.   Romans 8: For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  For to be]carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.  So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.  10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.  13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” Plain sheet of paper
