Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sunday   Many are afraid of the word Pentecost. We tend to treat the Holy Spirit like our crazy uncle we try to hide from our friends.    Pentecost Sunday - The birthday of the church. 3,000 were baptized and the church began. -       Technology, ever New Testament Church came from Acts 2.  -       Which means every church could be call a Pentecostal church.  -       The word Pentecost comes from a Greek word meaning fiftieth. The Jewish Festival of Pentecost falls on the fiftieth day after the original Passover. -       On that day, God gave the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. -       The Christian festival of Pentecost falls on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus.   The Holy Spirit is the 3rd member of the Godhead.  The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.   Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.    The Holy Spirit is a sign of 2 things throughout the Bible. 1.    WaterGenesis 1:2 And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. John 7:38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart (belly)  will flow rivers of living water.”   John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.   2.    Fire - Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. -       God spoke to Moses – Could have had bright lights, cool music, flashing LEDs, But God choose fire. -       God lead Israel with “fire by night”   Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.         There was a deference when the Apostles came from the upper room   -       Men that had doubted, divided, denied, suddenly were Bold and Powerful.   Acts 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.   Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.   Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.     Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.     People thought they had lost their minds Acts 2: 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.  15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only [e]the third hour of the day.  16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’   Acts 17:5  But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.  6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.     I cannot stop there.
